As COVID hit our country and our world was spinning out of control, I labelled a green folder, “Post Pandemic”. I still find the humor in that folder. Post pandemic – when will that be?
In reflection, it was a book that helped me as the leader of Compass, to get my feet back under me and provide my team the necessary focus to pivot our strategy and regain focus in a very turbulent year.
John Doerr’s Measure What Matters, describes the method of OKRs (objectives and key results) using a series of case studies and behind the scene look at many Silicon Valley heavy hitters. This system, used by giants such as Google, Intel, Bono, and the Gates Foundation, fosters greater discipline and communication around goals, and measures performance in shorter planning cycles.
We have a saying at Compass, “take what you like and leave the rest.” The same goes for Measure What Matters. All of the practices may not fit your organization. I challenge you to take the nuggets that work for you and your team to know what’s important to thrive in 2021. As for the green folder, I threw it out.
